money isn't an issue, they just think that Japan is a "dark, evil country" even though i have told them for the last 8 years I was going to study there, now the time comes when i ask them...and they say no! i have no idea why they would do this, help?
How can I study abroad if my parents are against it?
The art is to find out their real reasons for their refusal and their attitude and then address those. By sitting down together. Perhaps over Sushi in a Japanese restaurant.
So you should ask them the questions which allow you to udnerstand why and you need to listen. Don't say anything like "but...but...". Let them finish their objections. Perhaps you can take notes.
Then think about their concerns from THEIR view (not yours), try to understand your parents emotions and thoughts. And then find a creative solution for every concern.
For example they say: "The Japan socienty is male dominated sexist society and we are worried those men will rape you".
Then your creative thought could be"my life has been safe and protected until now but in real life I need to be able to deal with those situations and learn. What if I can find a way to guarantee you that I will be safe. I will live in a guarded American community and when I go out I will make sure that I always have a male Western companion with me. "
Or they say"We hate Japan because of Pearl Harbor"
Then you can have that thought.."the Pearl Harbors in this world can be avoided if the cultures understand each other better. What if my presence there will help you to work up your hatred and negative feelings. Wouldn't that be a win for you too?"
So - try and probe. ask a lot of "open ended" questions, questions you can not answer yes or no. And listen. Listen very carefully. Whatever reasons you hear from your parents. Take notes and work with them carefully.
Ask them for a 2nd session to address their concerns. Try to not do this in the same conversation because you need to prepare yourself.
Reply:You can't. You will need to do a better job convincing them of why you want to study there and how it will be a benefit to you. Have you learned the language yet?
If that does not work, you will have to wait until you are in college and apply for a student program through college.
Reply:If you are in college and money isn't an issue, just contact your advisor and he or she should be able to put you in the program. Whala. done. Be sure that your college offers study abroad to Japan, if not, I'd suggest you transfer and make things easier. If you are over 18 you don't need their consent.
Reply:We Parents can be difficult at times.
Try to find out what has your parents so turned off by Japan....I think it would be cool to go there myself. Ask them to go with you to start.
You might have to wait til you are 18 then go on your own....If your parents are still against it you may have to do it without any financial backing from them.....most likely after a while they might come around.
Reply:If money isn't an issue maybe all of you should go to Japan and check it out together.
