Does anyone know a good study abroad program for Spanish?

Im 29 years old and want to go to a country in Mexico or Central America to learn Spanish. I can speak fairly well now, but would like to learn better grammar and how to read and write. Price doesnt matter as long as its a strong program.

Does anyone know a good study abroad program for Spanish?
That's a good question. I worked as a teacher in Mexico for 9 years, and honestly (honestly!) it's hard to find ANY school that actually cares about quality.

I'm afraid I don't have any specific recommendations, but let me think about it... Feel free to email me and maybe we can discuss some ideas.

Where will you go for study abroad?

If you get a chance to study in Germany or Australia?Germany is in Dresden ,Australia is in Canberra! They both cost about 12000 euros to get a master's degree. Can you guys give some help?I want to know the advantages, and disadvantages for both places! Thank you in advance, by the way ,I am a Chinese.

Where will you go for study abroad?
I would go to England. There are the best universities in the world. But if you must pick one of Germany or Australia - I would suggest Germany, because there are old European Universities. Off the point your nationality (I am not English too, and not from USA, and I'm gradueted allready).

Is it a good idea to try to study abroad in two differant countries for two smesters in each country?

It would depend upon what your degree is and what you plan to do with your life. If you can use that time to master two different languages, then the year that your degree might be delayed would be well worth it. People who speak several languages (especially Americans who are VERY language challenged) are very valuable in the work force.

If you can afford it, do it!

Is it a good idea to try to study abroad in two differant countries for two smesters in each country?
Probably not. I think it would put you too far off course in your degree. You'd graduate late. It might be better to do one, two semester long exchange, and for the second overseas experience, do a summer program.

Is Australia a good country to study abroad at????

I live in the US. I visited Australia for a couple of weeks and loved it! I wouldn't study abroad particularly for my studies, but to enjoy the country. Though, how is the colleges at Australia and such?? The more you can tell me, the better. For example, what city/cities is the best part of Australia? and is studies harder than the US?

Is Australia a good country to study abroad at????
Australia is a great country to study in. I live in Sydney, but i used to live in Adelaide. I came to Sydney to study here, i attend the Syndey University (www.usyd.edu.au) it's a great university to study at. I would recommend picking a city, and then a university.

You could also study in Adelaide, but Adelaide is much smaller and is more of a quiet city, and has a lot of elderly people. But we have the Adelaide University, which is about 125 years old. i decided not to study in Adelaide because i had gone to high school there and i was a little tired of it, plus i had some family in Sydney.

You could also study in Melbourne, which is smaller than Sydney, but still bigger than Adelaide. Melbourne is a very artistic city and has a lot of young people, and it is only about a half an hour flight away from Sydney. If you go to Melbourne, i would recommend Monash University, or the University of Melbourne.

It really depends on what kind of city you would like to live in, and the weather you prefer. Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne can be quite cold during winter, but places like Queensland or Darwin are hotter. Also if you like beaches or not, because Adelaide has quite a few that are close to the city and are generally pretty unpopulated, whereas Bondi in Sydney can be really packed during summer.

good luck, and the universities here are great!
Reply:Australia is a great place to come and study at. In Australia we don't really have colleges but universities. It depends on what university you go to. E.g if you go to the top universities obvisouly the uni is going to be good while if u go to a small poor uni then it won't be that good of an experince. The state New South Wales is the best state to study at because it has Sydeny in it which is commonly known as the city side of Australia. If choosing a city to study at i highly recommend Sydney. I don't think the studies are harder nor do i think they are easier to the U.S. But that's my opinion. Good luck!
Reply:As Jessica said Australia is great! I'm currently studying at the University of Queensland which is one of the oldest universities in Australia, I love it. It's probably the best university in this state but I'm not sure about other states as I haven't been there, but I've heard only good things about them. Sydney is great obviously because it's so well known; I personally love Brisbane (capital of QLD). I think the studies are about the same, but I'm going to the US next year (maybe you could answer my q and help me pick a uni! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... ) so I guess I'll find out!

Good luck

What can you tell me about AYUSA/Intrax study abroad programs?

Hi everyone, I'm interested in doing a summer program abroad next summer with AYUSA (now known as intrax I guess). For those of you who have participated in one of the programs, what can you tell me about your experience? What was your impression of the company, and would you say it's worth it? Thanks so much

What can you tell me about AYUSA/Intrax study abroad programs?
Hi!

First of all, let me tell you that I was a foreign exchange student in the USA for 1 year and my exchange program, as you can guess, was AYUSA. It's the best exchange program in the world. First of all, they are prestige, they know what they do, they choose students based on their leadership potential and because they think that the student(s) is/are exceptional.

During your exchange program they take you places to visit, they organize meetings with the exchange students and of course they are always there to help you in your hard times.

So, I would just recommend you to do the program. It's worth it.

Good Luck!
Reply:Hopefully this is true for the study abroad outside of US too because actually I'm set to study abroad in france nxt semester :) good luck to u Report Abuse

Best place to study abroad for a Marine Biology major?

What do you think would be the best place with the most opportunities for a Marine biology major?

Best place to study abroad for a Marine Biology major?
Since I don't know where you are, "abroad" could be in the U.S.? We can hook you up with companies or educational and/or research institutions in many other countries around the world when you take your cooperative work experience course.

The education and training you take will depend on whether you intend to go into the practice of marine biology or into further studies of applied marine sciences. What I mean is that there are ways that you can have a career or start a business practicing marine biology such as mariculture, aquaculture and aquarium sciences; or you could have a career in academia or government that involves more studies of marine biology and marine sciences.

If you are interested in going out "collecting", we use that term instead of "fishing" when we're going out on our boat, then take courses in applied and practical marine sciences. If you're interested in working in a lab then take courses in physiology, biochemistry and biotechnology. We have introductory courses in those fields but also have courses that get you out onto the water and onto the mud flats and into the fish tanks.

See the supplied link for more information on the Carteret Community College program in applied marine sciences called Aquaculture Technology. and give me a call if you want a longer answer.

Regards, Skip

Oh, I almost forgot, the degree we offer is like the first two years of the university and you can transfer it to the world famous UNC-Wilmington Dept of Marine Biology as a junior and work toward your bachelorate degree. or you can transfer to East Carolina University, Dept of Biology which also has Aquatic studies, or to NC State University, Dept of Zoology or Dept of Marine Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

Good luck with your search and inquiry.

How can i study abroad?

My dad says the pass TOEFL is the basic of study abroad. And i have research the study abroad. But,i have discover, have a lot of association have holding the study abroad test. But,i want to know:which is the best for study abroad test?

How can i study abroad?
each country have their own language thesting requirement .. like IELTS for UK Austrailia and US too, DELF for france.. depends on where you are going.. email the colloge that you want to go to and ask for the requirements.. they will provide the best solution.
Reply:If you plan on applying to a Canadian or American university, then I believe the TOEFL is the standard. Some colleges in North America have an English study program that will help you prepare for this test, and also for university admission. For example, Columbia College in Vancouver has a popular program.

Do most students study abroad alone?

Do most people study abroad with a group of students or a friends or do people usually go by themselves? I plan to study in Sydney and I am just curious how others do it.

Do most students study abroad alone?
It is quite common to study abroad alone. You will find that most universities will conduct orientation activities for study abroad students which is a great way to meet other students and make some friends. Generally the fact that most study abroad students don't know anyone makes it really easy to make friends.
Reply:No. In my country, those Middle Eastern students get married first and go there as a couple. And usually students will be sent in groups (cut costs), which then they formed their own community circle. But it doesn't metter with whom you go, as long as yu get along with everyone!

We have sooooooo many universities here and TONS of engineering opportuninties here. The most important thing is you decide, which part of Canada you would like to go to.If you go to British Columbia..then you pick schools that deal with your intrests in that area.

Some of the schools might have long waiting lists,so if you apply,be prepared to wait, for a year or two.Work while you wait and when they inform you, they have place open for you...then apply for student visa.

You cannot apply for student visa unless you have been approved by a school in Canada. That letter is your proof of acceptance and your Student Visa application witll need to have that letter as a proof. That is the process usually.

Any tips for study abroad students?

I am going to Spain tomorrow to live with a host family for five weeks and study Spanish and history in a university. I've never really stayed at a stranger's house for that long- should I get a gift for them?? a thank-you card? do I have to eat meals, observe their religious rituals, etc? I am pretty clueless about what to expect so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any tips for study abroad students?
It is customary for visitors in Europe to bring a small gift. I have found that 100% real maple syrup is good because it is uncommon in Europe and they like it a LOT more than any other American food product. Other than that, something particular to your region, city, or college might be good. Something that identifies it as being particular to you is great. Don't go too overboard though.

A thank you card would be a nice additional touch.

You don't HAVE to eat meals or attend religious rituals or whatnot, but you ARE there to learn about the culture (I hope!), so it makes sense to experience some of these things. You might be surprised to learn that some of these "mundane" things grant greater insight into your studies or they might just be interesting experiences. Still, I'm not saying you need to convert or anything. Just learn about the people you are living with. It's polite and educational. If, on the other hand, you want to offend your hosts, demand that they change to your ways and belittle their own.

Dealing with culture shock: Set reasonable goals for yourself. Don't try too hard or set unobtainable standards. In fact, set low expectations for yourself at first - easily obtainable goals that will allow you to have some early successes. For example: instead of expecting instant language mastery, set a goal of learning a set number of new words each day. KEEP A JOURNAL! This is great because it allows you to record your progress and look back and recognize your accomplishments.

Stay in touch with people back home. For example, I realized too late that if I wanted to be an RA the next year I would have had to know when the application process was happening (January!) and arrange a telephone interview. I learned this in March... Yech!

A sure sign of culture shock is forming a cultural clique where you just hang out with people from your own country. One step down is just hanging out with expatriots - other foreigners. I'm not saying beat off all potential fellow citizens or fellow foreign students, but it is important to work on making friends from the country that you are visiting.

Make sure you pay attention in any cultural briefings or locale briefings. They provide important information like where not to be wandering out alone at night or whether it's safe to drink the water. I had some friends learn some of these things the hard way.
Reply:I would most definately get the family a thank you gift. If you haven't, learn about the culture of the city you're staying in. I would make it a point to eat meals with them, talk with them and get to know the family. I however, would not strictly observe their religious rituals. I'd observe and try them, to learn more about them. Definately bring a power converter!!
Reply:Yes take a gift. It is a bit late to start looking but take something from your country. Afterwards you should send a thank you card. You will be expected to eat with them. Try everything but if you really don't like it then they will understand. I don't think there will be many religious rituals you will need to take part in. Just be ready to give things a go. Be quick to say sorry and ready to laugh.
Reply:Best advice from me to u is to bring all ur communication machines such , note book , mobile and others..(don't forget your Walkman and family pictures too).. for the family , try to buy some thing from your home town that Spanish people really like but doesn't exist in Spain (not sooo expensive , u r a student ;-)). Try to discover about the family and know their customs . if u kind of people who have problems with food , then , bring a big food package of what u really like (like i do). about the clothes bring all u really like . i guess u can speak Spanish but in case bring some dictionary if u need it . About religion , it's really back to u (no comment). The most important tip is "DON'T BE LAZY" .

All the best for ur studying ...

Reply:If you're not planning to learn another language it would be quite usless going to a European country where the language isn't English.

England is the only European country with universities in the top 100 universities. The rest are American. I don't know why this is, but you should think very carefully about where you study because it will affect almost everything you do afterwards.

If you are fixed on the idea of coming to the UK there are many places to choose (even outside London). You need to check which institution is the top place for your particular field of study, then apply. Make sure that you find out about living costs of the area.

Britains UCAS website might help you:

Where in England is the best Place to study abroad?

I am a junior in the States looking to study abroad in England! I don't have unlimited funds but still want to have some fun and party over there a little bit... I also want to travel around Europe while I'm there... so I need access to a good airport.

Here are the cities I can choose: London, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Manchester, or Brighton...

Let me know what you think! Thank you so much =)

Where in England is the best Place to study abroad?
Hello.

England is a great place to live and study and you have some great cities to choose from there. Here a little bit about each place to help with your decision.

London

Frankly the best city in the world! I love the place; we have a buzzy night life- pubs, bars, clubs of every type, phenomenal restaurant culture with fantastic food from all over the world and wonderful museums and art galleries. Add to that a *brilliant* music scene, theatre and great parks and you have a fab place to study. Here are the downsides; Living in London is expensive. (Really expensive - accommodation here is likely to cost about 50% more than anywhere else on your list except maybe Brighton) Also there are five airports as well as a train link to continental Europe. Your European travel could become a habit.

Hull

My flatmate went to uni there and loved it. It is by all accounts a great city for student life. It's by the sea (the North sea - v. cold you probably will not want to swim in it.) It has a huge aquarium. It's in Yorkshire which is great. Downsides? It will be cold and wet in the winter, but then most of England is cold and wet in the winter. And there is only one airport close by but you can fly cheaply to Europe from it and they are adding destinations all the time.

Leeds

Another *great* student city - night life, music etc. Also in Yorkshire, I love Leeds and the surrounding area. One airport again but great trains to London or Edinburgh.

Leicester

The good people of Leicester are not going to thank me. But for me, here would be bottom of the list you have given. Nothing much happens and it smells of pies.

Manchester

Another great student city. Music scene here is almost as good as London and night life is great. Cheaper too. Also a couple of airports near by.

Brighton

On the south coast. You can easily get to London and all it's facilities, Brighton is fun and buzzy but smaller than the capital so may feel more personal. It is unfortunately almost as expensive here as London.

The main thing is you will have fun wherever you go. And when you travel don't forget the rest of the UK. It is a beautiful country.
Reply:LONDON I think is the best
Reply:london..it's a very good spot as there are a lot of good schools nearby

How do I convince my parents to let me study abroad in Spain?

My minor is Spanish.

How do I convince my parents to let me study abroad in Spain?
Are you in high school and how truly mature are you? What do they know of the exhange program you presumably would be entering. If you are in college, can they afford the expense? Good luck! Studying abroad is always beneficial!

Reply:Hi Jenna!

I love this question. I'm from Oregon, in high school I studied abroad for 3 months in Costa Rica, then in college I studied abroad for 6 months in Spain (in the south, a city called Seville- my fav. place on earth, definitely check it out). I believe so much in study abroad, that I actually work for AFS Intercultural Programs now. Just so you know for Costa Rica I went with a high school program called Partners of the Americas - cool program, but not really academically challenging. For Spain I went with CIEE and they are by far one of the best exchange programs for college students.

As for convincing your parents, I am going to make a few assumptions - you said your minor is Spanish so I am assuming you are in college -which would probably make you over 18. You are legally an adult, you don't need their permission to do anything. However, it is helpful to have their blessings and support when you study abroad. You have to decide how important this is to you - from my point of view, it is the most important decision I have ever made and I am scared to think of the person I would have become if I didn't study abroad. I STRONGLY encourage you to study abroad no matter what!

If your parents truly love you, trust you, support you and value your education they will give you their blessings. If they are worried about your safety, that doesn't make sense - you can die walking across the street, look at 9/11 and the world trade center, look at the Oklahoma City bombing. The only places in the world that are truly dangerous and I dont' recommend you travel to are listed on the State Department's website and I bet you can guess which ones they are (Iraq, Iran, etc. etc.) - notice Spain is not on the list. You are no safer here than pretty much any where else in the world - that is a hard fact that you and your parents should learn sooner rather than later, and don't learn it the hard way!

If it is the money issue, you have a lot of options. If you get scholarships or fin. aid from your university, talk w/ your counselor, a lot of times that aid can be applied to study abroad and a lot of the time studing abroad is cheaper than studying in the USA. For example - I went to Spain for about $9K for the semester, the private Jesuit university I went to cost about $15K a semester....I saved myself (and my parents) $6K that semester.

My suggestion, is when you talk to them, be as factual as you can. Find out every concern they have and systematically give them factual answers to calm their nerves. If you can find the factual answers give us a call at AFS or call CIEE and we all can give you tons of examples of the benefits of study abroad. I hope that has helped! Bueno Suerte!
Reply:You know thats a tough question..... if you are over the age of 18 then there is realy much they can do to keep you from going except that they may not pay your way or you could end up being kicked of the home.... if your wanting to go to spain to learn spanish, then just pay some mexican $15 and they'll teach you a lot including things you cannot learn in school lol. but all jokes aside, its usualy hard to convince parents to let you go somewhere they do not want you to go.... all i've have to say is good luck, if you make it stay safe
Reply:If you are older than 18 then you should go for it! Explore the world and this would open your perspective of life. Do things for yourself and don't worry about your parents' approval. I know that it's easier said than done but don't allow them to live your life when they already lived theirs. Good luck.

Where can I find a full-time job advising students about study abroad?

I really want to work in a university (or high school) with students who want to study abroad. but I can't find ANYTHING. I've tried lots of websites like higheredjobs.com, studentaffairs.com, etc. does anybody know of any other websites or something else I should try? specifically like a work-with-study-abroad-students website or something!! I can't find anything!! =( thanks!

Where can I find a full-time job advising students about study abroad?
Whenever you go to a university or college, one of the first people you will meet is an academic counselor. These are people who advise new students about particular courses of study that the student might be interested in. At my college, we have a study abroad director, who is in contact with just about every nation in the world at one time or another. He advises strictly about study abroad programs.

If you have already done study abroad, do it again! You need lots of experience to get the study abroad director's job. You also need at least a masters degree. Good luck!

I don't know about websites or anything, but I do that in Lat Am. I work independently and advise many different schools who do not have counsellors who advise on study abroad. You can try that or also... travel agencies. Really, a lot of travel agencies offer study abroad programs. "Study Abroad" really means a lot of things so you might try being more specific.
Reply:Well, why don' t you try the local Universities and apply directly to their job postings. Good luck that would be my advice to you.

no gain without pain. you cant go on a free ride around the world. whichever country you might choose, you need to finance not only the fee but your stay and general expense.

even if you think of a scholarship also, you Will require proof of adequate funds to even get a visa for that country.

What advice do you have for me, I have been told to study abroad in Galway, not Dulbin.....??

I am a 20 year old girl, going to study abroad in Ireland, still making up my mind on where, but I have found that Galway is cheaper than Dublin, so I am considering Galway very much. Is this a good place to party as well as study? Is this a good place for a student wanting to get to know as many Irish as I can???

What advice do you have for me, I have been told to study abroad in Galway, not Dulbin.....??
Galway is a lot cheaper then Dublin for rent and things like that, and the nightlife down there is brilliant, people are also very friendly, a lot friendlier then Dublin. Im from Dublin and we often go to Galway on the weekends, even simple things like the price of drink in the pubs is a lot cheaper.

Which business school is the best to study abroad at?

I'm thinking about studying at either Coppenhagen Business School or U of Manchester in England through the exchange program at my business school (Marshall School of Business @ University of Southern California). I'm wondering which of the two is better than the other and I'm also wondering if there are any other good European business schools that I could study at.

Which business school is the best to study abroad at?
London School of Economics. Hands down.

The other two you mentioned are fantastic schools, though.
Reply:AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHhahaha!

"London School of Economics" doesn't have a business program! (Their focus is government policy) Common mistake among people who know nothing about b-school! =)

My advice: London Business School Report Abuse

Reply:To echo Michelle AAAAAHAHAHAH! The only MBA the LSE offers is an executive one in conjunction with other unis. It focuses on the social sciences. London Business School is the best option in the UK. INSEAD in Paris is also good, but there tough language requirements for it. Report Abuse

Reply:London School of Economics is one of the top programs in the world, as is INSEAD in France.

Realistically, any international exchange you do will help you. If you can't get into the programs at LSE or INSEAD, then pick a school in a region that really interests you.

Please talk to your guidance councilor or one of your favorite teachers. There are schools in the US and England who have such study abroad programs, but they will still require that you have a recommendation from one of your teachers.

Other than that, I would also suggest using Yahoo search to look up the websites of the colleges abroad that you wish to attend.

Is it a good thing to study abroad?

i know its kind of early for me to be thinking of this, but i was planning to study abroad in japan. is it expensive%26amp; what kind of programs are there? oh and by the way i'm 14.

Is it a good thing to study abroad?
First off, it's not too early! If you want to study in Japan during high school you can and it's such a rewarding and life changing experience. Most go their Junior year and they prefer you apply up to a year+ in advance. I would suggest going through AFS. They have a great support system and are have been doing intercultural exchanges for 60 years now. They have up to 5 different programs- full year, semester, summer home stay, summer home stay plus, and summer language study. I would recommend the full year to get the most out of your stay. It's not exactly cheap to study abroad but you can apply for scholarships with AFS and do lots of fund raising.

Good Luck!

What are some things most international students worry about when going to study abroad?

i am an international student too, but want to some outside opinions too! anything that you can think of, from visas to clothing. thanks!

What are some things most international students worry about when going to study abroad?
I am from England and studying in the US and the one thing I never thought I would miss, but I do, is the food. Things just do not taste the same, but simple things like that you soon get over.

Other things include the visa interview, but you just have to remember it is not a test, so just relax. People worry about living in the city, making friends, the difference in culture and language. Being on their own for the first time in a place they are not familiar with.

Just remember it is an adventure, a life experience and do not forget that many people are not lucky enough to be in your shoes. Enjoy every moment and the make the most of it because you will never get a second chance.

I want to pursue an acting career. Should I study abroad after 'O' Levels or is 'A' Levels necessary?

I have a goal in life to be an actor. I want to pursue in that area and I am willing to be committed to it. I am taking my 'O' Levels this year (2008) and I was thinking of what I should be doing after I graduate. I was wondering if I do really need qualifications of an 'A' Level certificate to study acting or any forms of it. I need some suggestions and answers.

I want to pursue an acting career. Should I study abroad after 'O' Levels or is 'A' Levels necessary?
I am not an expert in this area, but from what I have seen and heard, your best route would be to join an amateur dramatics association or an acting school.

Because acting jobs can be few and far between, it is probably worth pursuing academic qualifications too so that you do not end up working in McDonalds in between jobs.
Reply:I got my o'level in Singapore, MBA in the States. If u take the States system, u don't need to have A level. Depend on where u want to study. British system need cambridge cer. The States require other,e.g. Toefl or other. If u under 18, still have chance of applying the States university by your school grade. For me, the States is more simple and faster and cost less. I got my master degree in States in 1.5 years, totally cost me USD 15,000, but 15 years ago.

I want to study abroad in Guadalajara for this summer (8 weeks), positive or negative experiences? Housing?

I don't want to do a host family stay and am looking into guest houses or apartments. I am interested in finding out information on safety, past experiences (from foreigners visiting or studying in Guadalajara, as well as any other information. I am from a big city, and would prefer to study and live in a big city.

I want to study abroad in Guadalajara for this summer (8 weeks), positive or negative experiences? Housing?
Guadalajara is simply an awesome place to travel and study. I attended IMAC (Instituto Mexico-Americano de Cultura) and have to say that Guadalajara is probably my favorite city that I have been to in Mexico. It is a big and modern city that has the best of both worlds: you can do everything in terms of fun and entertainment that you could do in the United States or Canada AND enjoy all of the unique culture that Mexico has to offer. There is great colonial architecture in the downtown historical district and plenty of area markets to explore. The people are generally friendly, especially when you make a sincere effort to show interest in their language and culture, and the young women of Guadalajara--Tapatias--are known to be some of the most beautiful in Mexico. The city is NOT overrun by tourists and thus you get the feeling that you are genuinely experiencing real Mexican life and not simply some artificial resort scene created just for foreigners. If you are determined to stay in an apartment and really do not want to live with a host family, make your own choice. However, living with a host family gives you irreplaceable insight into the local culture and gives you someone who can give you first-hand advice about safety and getting around the city. Speaking of safety, let me just say this. Yes, you need to take safety seriously and not be careless--perhaps even more so as a foreigner. Still, having said that, let me echo what the other poster said and tell you that you really do not need to be paranoid about it either. You are from a big city anyway, right? Would you take silly risks back home? You know not to walk around alone at night and to watch your belongings. Just use the same street smarts you would use in your own city and maybe step it up just a notch because you know you are a foreigner in a new environment and you should be fine. I just went to Guadalajara after Christmas to visit a friend and cannot wait to get a chance to go back. Bottom line? GO! If you change your mind, let me go in your place! LOL. :)
Reply:Living alone in a foreign country is the worst you can do. Some news reports indicate that Mexico is losing tourists because criminal are targeting foreigners as their favorite target. If you are a female then rape is a possibility.

Last year a couple were held hostage in their trailer by some burglars, the girl was raped while the boyfriend had a gun aimed at his head. Another problem are road attacks: armed criminals posing as cops (or real cops: WHO KNOWS!) stop you and take everything and you are lucky if they just want your money and not to kill or rape you.

Even rich and powerful Mexican families can't prevent to have their loved ones kidnapped for ransom so the only advise I can give you is to pray and hope for the best.

There are many honest Mexicans but the Goverment is doing nothing to fight crime and getting rid of corrupt cops. If I were you I'd go to Canada.

I want to study abroad in Portugal?

I'm taking Portuguese this semester and will probably try and take intermediate Portuguese next semester. After that, for my sophmore year, I'd like to maybe study abroad, or perhaps in my junior year. The schools are here don't have much as far as Portuguese classes, they don't have it as a major either, although they have other languages.

My question is, are there any good Portuguese colleges that teach in English? Perhaps what is known as an American college in Portugal? I want to be able to learn the language but I don't think I'll be ready to be taught in Portuguese.

I want to study abroad in Portugal?
I'd imagine that the central university in Lisbon would have the most English speaking professors, the most experience with foreign students, and would also give you the best educational experience.

I am a homeschool student and I would like to study abroad, are there any programs who take homeschoolers?

It isn't exactly an exchange program, but there is the People to People Student Ambassador Program. I did that when I was a bit younger. It was founded over 50 years about by Dweight D. Eisenhower (sorry for the poor spelling) to promote international peace and understanding through the education of the rising generation. You get information by going to their website and requesting an invitation to the next local information meeting (usually in the fall) or someone could reccomend you, or they get your name from lists provided to them by national academic talent searches. You then fill out an application and they will choose up to 40 students from each state (give or take a few) to spend about three or four weeks out of the summer in another country. You go with the other students, and about 3 or 4 Teacher Leaders, and when you get there you will meet with a Delegation Manager native to the country you are visiting who will be your head leader. You experience all sorts of exclusive events... Things like getting involved in government (meeting officials, learning how things work there, sitting in on a meeting, etc), exploring historical sites both natural and manmade, doing a service project (The two years I went we spent a day working on a farm in Ireland--herding sheep, milking cows, working in the bog, feeding the animals, making bread, collecting eggs, etc-- and distributing new school supplies and helping out with the students in a boarding school in Fiji) going to cultural events like plays, private tribal ceremonies (where applicable), museums, parks... I remember visiting castles in England and getting a chance to explore areas not open to the public, participating in a kayleigh(I think that's the right spelling) which is basically an exchange of music, stories, dance, etc among new and old friends in Scottland, panning for gold and gems in Scottland, learning to play a tin whistle in Ireland, going rock climbling, kiyaking, repelling, rafting, and on all sorts of other adventures in Wales and Australia (Note: England, Scottland, Wales, and Ireland all take place in one program.) Then of course there's the home stay where you get to spend a few days away from the rest of the group living with a carefully selected family in the country you're visiting...Usually with at least one child your age whom you will go to school with if it is in session at the time, which it usually is. That's usually the BEST part of the entire trip. Search People to People Student Ambassadors in google and it should take you right to the organizations website. It is a very homeschool friendly program. Definitely check it out.

I am a homeschool student and I would like to study abroad, are there any programs who take homeschoolers?
Well, you don't say where you live. The only exchange programmes I can find are for homeschoolers in Japan or Guatemala. Is either of those you?

I am an International Development major, and am looking to study abroad soon. What countries do you recommend?

I spent this past spring studying in Oxford, UK, and would like something different, but safe and with opportunities to travel similar (although I realize this may be hard) to those in Europe. I was thinking Eastern Europe, but have only very basic speaking skill in Italian and Spanish. Any suggestions? No civil wars, please!

I am an International Development major, and am looking to study abroad soon. What countries do you recommend?
Your choice of destination should involved the quality of the program. There are some very good and safe programs in Asia and Africa. My suggestion is to worry less about the traveling (eurorail pass style) and to invest yourself more in the particular destination that you select. You will gain much more by longer more involved exposure to a particular culture and region. Program selection will also depend on the policies of your home college or university as many institutions accept credit from only "approved programs."

There are development programs that incorporate travel into the program so that the issues are approached in a comparative way.

One organization that is widely regarded as a leader in this type of education is The School for International Training http://sit.edu/studyabroad/index.html. They even have a traveling program in Spanish speaking South America - The Southern Cone program which looks at Regional Integration, Development, and Social Change. This program takes students to Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. You might also look at University of Minnesota's MSID (Minnesota Studies in International Development) programs http://www.umabroad.umn.edu/programs/AFR...

Finally, there are a series of programs offered by The International Honors Program http://ihp.edu.

Good Luck!
Reply:Whereever the money is.....the best opportunity
Reply:Actually.. I do know a lot about that.. Rather than saying or rather askilng what countries.. you should ask what region.. You will soon learn that for international development work, those jobs are divided up(not a good choice of words) among regions.. For example, Africa takes in all of Africa.. South America for that continent, Asia, Far East, Middle East areas and Sub Continent areas(India, Pakistan, Bangledish, Nepal, etc).... Then you decide the countries within those areas
Reply:I'd say Japan and Italy.

How much money does the average study abroad program for one semster cost?

I would say it depends on where you plan to go.

From what I saw while doing my own researches, in average studying abroad in Europe is around $10,000 - $15,000.

In South America (Costa Rica, Ecuador...) it is about $7,000 - $10,000.

In Africa it is $10,000-13,000.

These prices are about the fees for just the school, you would have to pay something else (around $1,000 - $5,000) for housing, and think about food, outings and other...

My recommendation would be:

- if you are just interesting in a study abroad experience (meaning just for a semester or year) go on www.studyabroad.com and you will be able to look for study abroad programs in the country of your interest and compare prices.

- if you want to get your bachelor and/or master degrees abroad, you can look on this great website: www.macquil.com . You will find US universities abroad and you can apply for students loans or scholarships.

Hope this helps.

I live in america and want to study abroad in London/UK?

I am an eighth grade student, and want to study abroad for high school. I feel as though I haven't really been exposed to anything in my life, and see studying abroad as a great opportunity not only to learn, but to also grow as a person. Some questions I need answered first are:

Is it possible to do all 4 years abroad?

What are some expenses?

Can I study at a boarding school?

Can you name some schools in London where they accept foreign students?

Reply:You are not providing enough information.

1. You are under age. What do your parents think about this?

2. You say you are living in USA, but you don't say if you are a citizen of USA or somewhere else. The requirements are very different for different countries.

3. The expenses are totally dependent upon the cost of living including insurance which all the schools will require) and cost of schooling. These variables are extensive and you can not know them until you can locate the city and school to which you will be going.

If your parents have enough money, anything is possible. If they don't have enough money, nothing is possible.

:-) I saw a road sign in ... I think it was Ireland ... it said: "Santa gives more to rich kids than to poor kids. Stop lying to your kids about Santa Claus!"

Now I find that very sad, but in fact it reflects our world.

I am having a hard time deciding whether to study abroad my first semester freshman year in college in spain?

I will be going to UVM and would be back second semester, will i miss out on to much?

I am having a hard time deciding whether to study abroad my first semester freshman year in college in spain?
I would hold off on going abroard. It is great that you are even presented with the opportunity to go so early in your college career, most schools dont let you know untill a bit later, but that means you will get more opprotunities later on.

Adjusting to college is a fun but challenging time and the stress of going abroad might be difficutl. It might be easier on you to get used to your new learning enviornment and get your feet set in your major.

You will also be making most of your friends in your earlier years of college so you do not want to miss out on that either!
Reply:I think you will gain so much more than you will miss.
Reply:WHY? What do you think you would get out of just ONE semester by going to school in Spain? AND... I assume you speak Spanish fluently because they won't be teaching you basic Spanish or in English.

If you are really serious about studying abroad, then spend at least your Freshman and Sophomore years in a U.S. college and THEN decide where you want to go in Europe.

Since you didn't share what you plan to Major in, any other advice is meaningless... But, I can tell you this... the one thing I found out when I started in University in England was, I was VERY FAR behind the European school system even though I was carrying a 3.82 GPA in the U.S. and I had a LOT of remedial work to do along with my regular studies.
Reply:First off, spend a year, not a semester.

Talk to your international student/study abroad office. They will only accept credits from approved universities/programs. Usually, you wait until your junior year to study abroad. At that point, you have a major, and more proficiency in Spanish. It'll make it a more meaningful experience.

Reply:a bottle of Californias best wine. Don't worry its legal for children to drink wine in France

2001 Corison Kronos Vineyard ($90) Veteran winemaker Cathy Corison creates this vividly aromatic, cassis-scented Cabernet from low-yielding 30-year-old vines surrounding her winery, off Napa Valley's famed Highway 29 between Rutherford and St. Helena.

2001 Beringer Private Reserve ($100) Beringer's top bottling, a blend of fruit from six different Napa vineyards, has been a benchmark for California Cabernet since "winemaster" Ed Sbragia made its inaugural vintage, back in 1977. The black currant–packed '01 effortlessly carries on that tradition, and should age gracefully in a cellar for many years to come.

2002 Dalla Valle ($100) Seamless and profoundly elegant, with soft tannins and a touch of Cabernet Franc that adds a faint herbal note to the nose, this remarkable Napa Cabernet (made by star consultant Mia Klein) comes from Dalle Valle's estate vineyards tucked away on the east side of Oakville.

2002 Quintessa ($120) Biodynamic viticulture and meticulous attention in the cellar from winemaker Aaron Pott have helped make Quintessa, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, one of California's top reds. The polished '02, saturated with smoky black plum and black currant flavors, may be the most impressive Quintessa produced to date.
Reply:Buying them wine is surely not the way to go. The French pride themselves in their wine, and wont be too pleased if you suggest California wine is better (it is). After all, they are a very proud people and tend to be clingy to their own customs and WINE!

My advice is to go for something symbolic and meaningful. They wont give much notice to something expensive, as they would for something that comes from the heart and has a sentimental meaning. Look for something that is from your culture, a small statue of liberty, mugs from popular US cities, or Tshirts from cities like New York or California. They'd surely appreciate those as well.

Enjoy your trip to France, bon voyage!
Reply:I assume you will want light items for the trip. You could take a local specialty food like small bottles of salsa, maple syrup or bags of nuts or dried fruit. Is it possible to study abroad during grad school??

I've always wanted to study abroad, but don't think I'll be able to and I'm graduating next year.... but its just one of those things that I HAVE to do.

Is it possible to study abroad during grad school??
Yes of course! You can just apply for a position on a course overseas, or check into courses that have a period of time spent abroad - if you can finance it yourself you are in a much better position and can have your pick. If you need something that has sponsorship then start checking into programmes like the Fullbright Scholarship that sponsors overseas studies for graduates.

The exact courses or programmes you go for depends on your subject area of study.
Reply:Yes you can. For any scholarly major (other than one based on America) studying abroad in very valuable and encouraged. Even MBA programs have opporunities for study abroad. Look into the programs to see which ones have these options, and which have the best options before you apply.
Reply:I have an american friend who got accepted to cambridge graduate school during her senior of undergrad. So it's possible.

Which countries are best to study abroad?

I am a sophomore in college currently majoring in business management and marketing. I would like to go to somewhere that isn't too expensive and is safe. I would need the classes to be in English because my Spanish isn't so good. Right now I am considering Japan, Mexico, Spain, Germany, France, China, Hong Kong, and United Kingdom. Any thoughts or suggestions would greatly be appreciated!

Which countries are best to study abroad?
Best, or least expensive?

If best: USA and UK, I know about them. Other countries may be good as well.

If least expensive: Kosova/o, my home country. There are foreign universities in Kosova as well, not only the local ones.

You could check out GoAbroad.com's Study Abroad Directory: http://www.StudyAbroadDirectory.com/. It's a pretty comprehensive site as the GoAbroad staff took the time to verify most of the program providers(look for the light green check, check+ and check++ logo).

Discerning what's popular can also be checked via the testimonials of the program providers' listing(look for the "speaking" light blue logo).

Reply:What a wonderful chance!!! But i think you should choose the USA, coz after that you can stay and work there. Certainly just in few years then you can have a lot of experiences. And maybe there are more better oportunities in this country. While working here you can promote or research if you want. when i was you, i choose the USA as the first and the only choice.

Even you choose the USA or not, i hope that you ll do everything, that you think right. Thanks for reading. My name is Luan, from Vietnam, 23, nice to meet you

Is Ireland a good place to study abroad?

I am a sophomore in college (U.S.) and am considering studying abroad in Ireland, just wanted to know if this is a good place or would you recommend a better place and I am a business major.

Is Ireland a good place to study abroad?
if u are a buisness major i recommend you go to SWITZERLAND!!! it is the heart of European commerce! It's a little bit of France, a little bit of Germany and languages from all across Europe are spoken there

If you like Ireland GO! GO! GO! we rarely have opportunities to study abroad (I to am a sophomore and going to Paris!)

You might also want to consider South America, particularly Peru or Argentina even Venezuela, their commerce is booming or maybe China Japan and India!!! sooo many choices but my top pic would be switzerland for it's diversity alone! and also for it's proximity to the entire world!
Reply:Coventry business college is the best place for you.
Reply:Don't mind that come to Ireland and in particular Galway its got 2 third level collages one university one IT its pretty much a student city with loads of places to go out and the people are really friendly unlike Dublin

Do you have any idea how to convince Scandinavian students to go to study abroad(marketing of education)?

I am working on the Action plan: how to motivate Danish students to go to study abroad. Do you have any suggestion?

Do you have any idea how to convince Scandinavian students to go to study abroad(marketing of education)?
Don't try to sell study abroad as an alternative to studying in Denmark. Try to sell it as an extension supplementing and complementing the studies in Denmark.

Look into partnerships of Danish universities with universities of other countries and use the partnership programs to make the point that these programs extend and enhance the academic possibilities available in Denmark.

* Point out programs that allow for degrees in multiple countries - the consequence of this is easy access to the employment market of these countries.

* Point out international programs that are leading in research.

If you are lucky you might even find some area where studies at universities are not available in Denmark but at the partner universities.
Reply:That going to be very hard; because Denmark has some great Universities. Scandinavians have one of the best education systems in Europe.

Ja taler du Dansk

Have you ever experienced a high school study abroad program?

I am very interested in the idea of it. I have the funds and the time, not to mention it would benefit me greatly on a college application. How was your experience?

Have you ever experienced a high school study abroad program?
I'm currently hosting my 13th foreign exchange student! I can tell you it's a fantastic experience and one that will change you forever! And yes, colleges will love it!

If you have the funds and the time, definitely go for it!

Here's a web site that will help you out a lot -- it's written by exchange students and has lots of great info! http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/

Your first step is finding a program. Make sure it is CSIET listed (www.csiet.org) and/or ask your school counselor. Reliable ones tend to be Aspect, AFS, Rotary and YFU. If you want to go next year, you must hurry! Most programs will have probably closed down applications or are about to!

Good luck!

This is a great volunteer program you might find helpful.

I did a school trip abroad in high school to the UK, which led me to live there in college for 6 months. It was especially rewarding because I went alone. I definately recommend taking off, leaving everyone and everything you know behind, and trying something new, even for a little while.

After finishing ur hs exam, u should apply for any foreign university by seeing their advertisements in newspapers.u should be clear with their details by contacting them using their address given in newspapers. You may ask them itself about their scholarship tests. It is not necessary to give jee for pursuing this subject.Generally, u should get high marks in english, physics, chemistry, maths, biology for getting scholarships in foreign university.all the best.

Are there any study abroad programs that aren't linked to your specific school?

I am exrememly interested in studying abroad, however my university does not have the program I am interested in. Are there any other study abroad programs that one could do regardless of their school?

Are there any study abroad programs that aren't linked to your specific school?
Yes! There are several organizations specifically dedicated to study abroad programs for students from all universities. Check out the American Institute for Foreign Study at www.aifs.com, College Consortium for International Studies at www.ccisabroad.org, and Council on International Educational Exchange at www.ciee.org. If these sites don't help you, I suggest talking to a study abroad or international exchange counselor at your university. I hope you find the program you are looking for!

What are some good places to study abroad if I am studying to become a social worker?

If you want to counsel/mentor kids you could go to the Anasazi program in Arizona. Almost all of my brothers and sisters and a sister-in-law have been there and were successfully launched into their careers, not to mention fixing a problem before it's too serious and getting motivation. They love their jobs. I'm thinking about going there, too. You won't regret it!
