If I study abroad in the U.K would I have to repeat that grade I missed?

There is a program with my school to study abroad, and I'm considering it greatly, but when I went to go to get the information from the counselor, he told me that many of the students who came to my school from other countries are having to make that year up later. When I asked him if I would have to do that, he said I should look into it (he's the counselor!)...

Anyways, I'm in 10th grade. If I went to the U.K. during my 11th grade year, would I have to come back and make it up?

If I study abroad in the U.K would I have to repeat that grade I missed?
It depends on what classes you take, and if they are considered the equivalents of those required by your school in the US. So get a copy of the curriculum for the exchange program, and bring it to your school. See if it matches up with what you'd be taking in the US, and in what areas you'd fall behind. Then develop a plan on how to make up those lost courses when you return.

Try to do as much as you can to make the classes you pick in the UK match up with those that you'd need at your home school, at least in the vital areas: math, English, foreign language, science, and gym. If you realise that, say, doing a qualifying gym course overseas isn't possible, then see if you'll be able to double up on that when you return, or do it over summer school as soon as you return.

So your counsellor was right. It does depend, and you'll have to look into it. Plan things carefully, and you'll be less likely to fall too far behind.
Reply:You;d have to get the curriculum from the foreign school, then submit it to your current school. If they approve, get it in writing that you wouldn't have to repeat your grade.

I studied in Denmark during my junior year of high school, and didn't have to make up the grade--only 1 math course I missed while away.

I think it's a wonderful and very valuable experience. Best wishes!
Reply:Well, get in touch with the person who is running this and ask. I doubt that you will have to repeat. The other people probably had to repeat because they were not paying attention to their school-work while in UK.
Reply:You would likely need a lobotomy when you return to get back on an even footing.

Seriously the curriculum in the UK leans much more to education and far less extra curricular activities so you will likely be more advanced in your education through your year abroad. The first couple of years at college/university in the US seem to be a generalized mish mash to get you up to the point where the rest of the world enters higher education (you major - when we go to higher education it is to study in one field).

One place where the UK is lacking is in the area of public speaking - its probably why the Brits seem a little more reserved in general ( and I have a morbid hatred of talking in front of a room full of people - only nerve wracking part of my wedding).
