Ill be doing a study abroad in Tamarindo Beach, Costa Rica. How big is the town really?

When I looked online there wasn't much info other than its a big surfing spot. Is San Jose 5 hours away by car? How much would it be to fly there from Tamarindo Beach? What is there to do there when I am not in class besides go to the beach?

Since you are going to the Guanacaste region, I would fly in to LIR (Liberia) instead of SJO (San Jose) . From the airport there you can take a taxi ride to Tamarindo and save yourself a long and needless drive or costly flight from San Jose.

As to what else to do beside the beach and surfing, there are plenty of natural attractions within a day's journey:

* Marino Las Baulas National Park

* Ostional National Wildlife Refuge

* Lomas Barbudal Biological Reserve and Dr Rafael Lucas Rodriguez

* Palo Verde

* Rincon de la Vieja National Park

* Guanacaste National Park

* Santa Rosa National Park

* Tenorio Volcano and Miravalles Protected Zone

There are also plenty of other beaches nearby in Guanacaste.
