How much cash should I bring on a three week study abroad to France?

While I've never done a study abroad in France, I was an intern in Northern France last summer and I've traveled through France a lot. Bringing hard currency may not be the best idea, because they don't let you carry too much currency through customs checkpoints (but it is mostly the honor system). Also, if you are robbed, then you'll find yourself with NO money.

A credit or a debit card is a good idea. Most French stores and restaurants accept american cards (you'll want to make sure that it's marked in the windows or on the registers before you start filling a shopping cart or ordering your meal--remember: Acceptez-vous les cartes de crédit américaines?--and you'll also often end up showing the cashiers how to use it, as they're not used to our swipe system).

Also, check with your bank before going. My bank charges me a 3% "currency exchange fee" when I use my debit card like a credit card, however, when I pull money out of an international ATM, there's just a $5 fee. This means that if I pull out more than 200 euros worth from the ATM, I am actually losing less money than just paying with my card at the register.

It really is practically impossible to tell you how much to expect to spend, because I don't know what is already paid for. Do you have to pay to get into museums? That can add up fast. The metro system is cool, but that can be expensive as well. Are you traveling to other cities other than Paris? Will you have to pay for your train/plane? Nicer restaurants will end up being about 20 to 30 euros a meal.

You may want to check out the Fodor's Online website. They have a guide to restaurants (and hotels if that isn't taken care of by your travel group). Oh, and for the restaurants, my wife and I found that the traiteurs chinois are often less expensive than eating elsewhere, but you're going to miss out on that authentic experience.

Good luck and enjoy your stay. I hope that helps.

take some sufficient cash along say Rs5000 and some travellers cheque and credit cards along with u...
Reply:depends how much you drink, if you like to party probably 5-600 American
Reply:All that you have and borrow some to get home on from your friends.
Reply:I can't say a for-sure dollar amount, but I'd say a lot! You'll want to sample the culture of France as much as possible which may mean eating out quite a few times, shopping around, and sites (museums and other attractions that may have an admittance fee.) I suggest, take more than you need so that way you won't run. Have fun!
Reply:Very little, buy a prepaid credit card and some travlers checks. Don't get ripped off!!
Reply:France is very expensive. I went there 4 years ago back packing. I suggest you go to the grocery store whenever possible instead of eating at restaurants. Also, make sure if you get a coffee or drink, stand at the bar, they charge extra when you sit at a table. If you get a chance, buy a Lonely planet book or some kind of guide book, they are great for making sure you find the best deals at places to stay, restaurants, bars %26amp; attractions. Good luck %26amp; have fun!
Reply:About 20 million should cover your expenses but try to carry all your cash in change.
