How do I convince my parents to let me study abroad straight out of school? Please read on..?

They misunderstand me. They think it is selfish greed or a wannabe attitude or an escapist strategy that drives me to study abroad. I swear it isnt so. It matters little to me whether my perfect Uni be at home or far. There is just something inside me that says this is what I want to, can do and will be happy to do. I know what I'm doing and why, I just need them to trust me and help me and most of all believe in me. Because there negative attitude is killing my self belief and I've started doubting myelf and my abilities to get into an Ivy League Uni.I want them to understand that I dnt want to exploit them monetarily or othrwise by studying abroad, I'll get a loan or aid or work, I just need to get into my dream Uni first and I need their support, trust and guidance. but they know nothing about studying aboard and doubt and discourage me.. Please help me! I'm feeling too low..

Slight giggles, I am a US Citizen and desire to study in India. My answer might not be helpful but the only way you can change your parents attitude and thoughts is by telling them to give you a chance to prove yourself. You're not a small girl anymore. You need to step in the big bad world and face everything by yourself! Tell them about the pros and cons of studying abroad. While it is true that no place is as safe as your home town because you've been around it so much, everything has it's ups and downs. Is there a specific place you want to study? Do some research, share important facts with your parents so they can start believing you. It is nothing more than the lack of trust that is holding you back. Don't give up on your dreams, pursue them anyway. Your strong steps today will make a bolder woman tomorrow. Good luck with your future.
Reply:Show 'em that you're responsible and you also need to realize that they have a reason... reason of loosing their child perhaps?

Why study abroad straight out of school? I too had a tough time convicing my parents I wanted to study abroad out of high school but I realized there's no hurry. I studied in a local college even though my heart still wanted to study abroad. I showed my parents brochures and showed how I can survive myself. I assured them that everything would be fine. I was able to study abroad just like I intended to.
Reply:prepare...make research about everything, how to get loan, where to stay, what to eat, means of access, costs, ....everything. also explore the uni you want to study, learn everything about it, make a list of pros%26amp;cons...then talk with your parents, show them how much you want to study abroad, how seriously you take this, compare this alternative (i mean studying abroad) to studying at your home country, show them how much it would contribute to you, to your personality, academic career, etc. be determined about the subject and make them feel it. do not get nervous, do not speak loudly, be calm, and easy.

but first of all study your lesson carefully, be ready to answer their questions...
Reply:You are missing some important things here. Your parents love you and worry about you being so far away. Maybe they also can't afford to send you overseas to study. Don't automatically assume that they don't trust you or believe in you. Why don't you act responsibly and do it on your own?

Go to a college here in the states and sign up for their foreign exchange program (most big colleges have one). If your grades are good enough, you will be chosen for the opportunity to go.

As a parent, I also would not have sent my children abroad to study. I would worry about them with all the unrest in the world today. I also could not afford to do it. However, if they wanted to go and did the foreign exchange program, I would not deny them the opportunity.
